Hexavalent Chromium Free Coatings The European Legislation has banned the marketing and usage of materials and components containing heavy metals for various products on the European market. Reference directives for the above restrictions are: 2000/53/CE (also known as the ELV: End of Life Vehicles directive), and 2002/95/CE (also known as RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive), respectively regulating automotive components and electrical and electronic equipments. It is worth to remember that, before the above directives, the prohibition to use heavy metals was already applied to the packaging materials. One of the issues is the replacement of the anticorrosive finishes containing hexavalent chromium (chromium conversion coatings on zinc coatings, on aluminium, etc.). This is the reason because Ecoimpresa/Cermet decided to promote the conference "Hexavalent Chromium Free Coatings - Cr(VI)Free 2006". It is worth to remember that, while the quoted directives aim at the prevention of hazardous wastes from vehicles and electric/electronic equipments, no limitations have been set to chromium plating (thick hard and thin decorative chromium coatings), from hexavalent chromium solutions, since these coatings consist of metallic (zero valence) chromium. Other companies, although not directly involved by the directives, are working to reduce the use of dangerous substances: from manufacturers sensible to environmental issues, to suppliers anyway dragged into the problem, e.g. decorative chromium platers invited by the IPPC (Integrated Prevention and Pollution Control) legislation to switch from hexavalent to trivalent process solutions when technical specifications as colour, hardness and corrosion and wear resistance are not required. Operators who will not be able to timely comply with the above mentioned regulations will loose competitiveness and market share, since similar prohibitions are about to be introduced also by non-European countries.
